“Ship” (2005)
by Allison Schulnik
I went to the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis over the weekend and this was my favorite piece on exhibit. Schulnik & others’ allegorical works were paired alongside some of Goya’s “Los Caprichos” and “Los Disparates” etchings, which is a pretty big honor. Allison Schulnik is known for ‘sculpting’ her paintings — the burning vessel sticks out about a fist’s width from the canvas. Eerie faces are engulfed by the blaze and wisp spiritedly into a dark sky. She has also made a Grizzly Bear music video and studied Experimental Animation at CalArts, where I still dream of going for grad school.
