Driving by this building on a road trip when I was 16 was an eye opening moment. A midwestern, Pitchfork-reading, Intonation Festival bound kid, I knew something about the independent/DIY lifestyle, but nothing about it’s presence in the big city. It was a deciding factor for me to eventually move to New York and keep doing what I was doing. I’m lucky to have added riding my bike across the Williamsburg Bridge to drink 40’s and smoke cigarettes at a Monster Island show to my list of memories. I wish I was around for its last days. It will be missed.
Monster Island in Williamsburg is being knocked over to build, who knows, another condo. To draw the “curtains” on the space, they spilled paint down the side of the building covering its famous murals. (Source)
